This proposed purchase was set to occur between visits to the UK, having failed miserably to find a combination of jacket and trousers that come remotely close to fitting my odd frame in the US. Weekend rant – HSBC: global bank…give me a break
I never cross post from other sites but this is an exception…a very large exception. Cross posted from my ZDNet blog . HSBC claims to be the global bank – or at least that’s what it says on UK adverts and on its website . Truth is it is anything but a global bank. At least in the online sense. How do I now? I live in Spain, most...
That Individual Looking to Buy Your Business Might Be an Undercover IRS Agent
I was at the annual SuperSeminar a couple of weeks ago. Bob McKenzie , one of the presenters, mentioned that the IRS has found that sending undercover agents to businesses that are for sale has been a very useful strategy. Mr. McKenzie told the story of the sale of a Chicago pub, where the owner maintained two sets of books. The pub owner told a...
Starting a Business? A Good Resource from the IRS.
Tax agencies may be annoying to deal with, but the IRS has one of the best websites of any entity in the U.S. A client told me about the IRS’ Virtual Small-Business/Self-Employed Business Workshop. It’s an excellent resource on what you need to do to deal with tax agencies. It’s well organized, and it has a lot of useful information....
I Only Got 54 Years Last Time
We have yet another nominee for the Bozo Tax Offender of the Year award. Let’s head to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Back in 2005 Gayle McIntyre pleaded guilty to 36 counts of state tax fraud. She was sentenced to 54 years in prison, but the prison time was suspended; Ms. McIntyre instead received probation and had to make restitution of $127,000....
The Sky Is Not Falling (Yet)
For online gamblers, yesterday was the day that banking regulations relating to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) of 2006 went into effect. The legislation itself passed in 2006 (it was attached to the Safe Ports Act). Kay Bell at her excellent blog, Don’t Mess With Taxes, stated, “Attention online gamblers. When...
Donations to Haiti Relief Via Online Gambling Websites
I’ve received quite a few inquiries asking about making a donation to Haiti earthquake relief via an online gambling website. Here’s the latest: An online poker site is saying that if I transfer funds to a specific account, they’ll use the money for earthquake relief in Haiti. Would such contributions be tax deductible? The answer...

Sage launches X3 v.6
Sage launched X3 v.6 on Wednesday in Paris. It is the first time I recall Sage putting on a big show for one of its products. For those that don’t know, X3 is the 2005 acquired French Adonix ERP product that has since been developed under the Sage brand. It is aimed at the mid-tier (as we would define in Europe) and has something around...

Small Business Tax Penalties: What They are & When They are Charged
When the IRS charges your business with tax penalties , you may be shocked at the amount they charge. IRS penalties at times can account for 50% of a tax bill at times. Many of the IRS penalties have their limits but the IRS also does tend to stack some penalties which can lead to enormous tax bills. Understanding the most common penalties the...

Google apps integration
I missed this a few weeks ago but it seems FreeAgent has done a Google Apps integration in the sense that you can use Google Apps as a way of single sign-on to FreeAgent. Trivial? Maybe. How many of you sign into a variety of online accounts? I’m betting just about everyone. One of the things I consistently hear as a grump among users of...
