Can you ignore Facebook?

December 1st, 2009 admin

My number one barometer for anything tech is ‘er indoors. As one of the most technophobic people I know, she has eschewed most of what I consider essential tools for many a year. All that’s changed in the last couple of months. First was the MacBook which she wanted in order to get onto email with the family back in the UK. Unfortunately, I commandeered the laptop so what started as a good faith purchase ended up as yet another nail in the technophobic coffin. That changed when I acquired …

Facebook can be scary
Facebook can be scary
I’m not a fan of Facebook but I retain a presence there because my family like it. I’m yet to be convinced that Facebook represents a platform from which professionals can derive useful business. Imagine my surprise this last weekend when I found that my account had been compromised . It is seriously scary stuff. I wrote on IT Counts...
Facebook and business software
Facebook and business software
This week, TechCrunch gave some PR space to Marc Benioff, CEO Salesforce and what does he do? Asks the question: ‘ Why isn’t all enterprise software like Facebook? ‘ If you’ve spent any number of years in business software you’d know this is an uncomfortable question. Benioff claims that he starts his day in Facebook....

Gapingvoid’s big adventure or monumental cock up?
This has everything to do with the profession and yet nothing at all. Bear with me here. Regular readers will know that Hugh MacLeod, aka Gapingvoid is one of my online heroes. Earlier this month he and I were talking and he was bemoaning the way the blog media worked has become ‘too big’ and ‘too anonymous.’ He wanted...
Does your privacy matter? Not according to Facebook
Does your privacy matter? Not according to Facebook
I’ve been reading some of the commentary around remarks made by Mark Zuckerberg, CEO Facebook during an interview at a recent awards ceremony. Viewed from this side of The Pond it makes for alarming reading. The Huffington Post puts out a partial transcription of the whole interview. The key points: People have really gotten comfortable...
How a bank lost my business after 16 years
How a bank lost my business after 16 years
As more accounting solutions look to find banks willing to provide hooks into their systems, it is becoming clear there are banks that get customer service and those that don’t. The difference is a yawning chasm. The other week I announced on Twitter that I planned to buy a suit. This was a shock to many who only know me as a moderately...
Going pear shaped: TAS style
Going pear shaped: TAS style
I have fond memories of TAS Books before it was acquired by Sage in 2001. Great software, did what it said on the packet, excellent entry level accounting package that never realised its market potential – hence it was acquired. So you have to ask yourself – what did they do to deserve this entry in the TAS User Forum hosted by UK...

Office gallery: gapingvoid style
When I was in practice I liked my offices to be friendly and welcoming places. Sure, there was the Big Divide aka my desk but I liked to have a few pieces of art on the walls. Last Autumn, my good friend Hugh MacLeod starting selling his art . I started buying. It’s the first time I’ve had the chance to support a living artist who...

Lerryn shaking up Sage via MyPAYE?
Last week, Neil Seekings, sales director of The Lerryn Group and I had a backwards and forwardsing over email. He said: We are launching a link for MyPAYE and the Sage 50 product family which will allow Sage clients to use MyPAYE online and through a small desktop app download pay data into Sage 50 this might cause a stir from Sage as no need...
On being angry…
On being angry…
Earlier today we heard that a dear friend is on life support and not expected to make it through the next 24 hours. As we sit here waiting for news, the direct family are in pieces expecting the worse. Regardless how much we sugar coat, Mick’s day is done. Having to call the family up on Skype as landlines were down was a PITA. Why should...
Another Early Nominee for Bozo Tax Offender of the Year
It’s only February and we have our second nominee for the Bozo Tax Offender of the Year award. Via the TaxGirl comes the sorry story of Jonathan Wiktorchik, Jr. Mr. Wiktorchik lost his Chiropractic license in 2007. He had pleaded guilty to insurance fraud after he submitted 1800 phantom claims for $90,000. He ended up going to prison and had...
