Donations to Haiti Relief Via Online Gambling Websites

January 26th, 2010 admin

I’ve received quite a few inquiries asking about making a donation to Haiti earthquake relief via an online gambling website. Here’s the latest: An online poker site is saying that if I transfer funds to a specific account, they’ll use the money for earthquake relief in Haiti. Would such contributions be tax deductible? The answer is no: Contributions made through an online poker website are not tax deductible. In order for a contribution to be tax deductible, you need proof of the donation: …

Haiti Charitable Tax Deduction Legislation Likely
In a rare show of bipartisanship, Democrats and Republicans plan on introducing joint legislation to allow Americans to claim a tax deduction for charitable contributions to Haiti earthquake relief in 2009 though the deductions are made in 2010. I expect this legislation to pass by early February. However, I do not expect conforming legislation to...
House Passes Haiti Charitable Donation Law
The House of Representatives unanimously passed a law allowing individuals to take 2010 contributions toward earthquake relief in Haiti on their 2009 tax returns. I expect the Senate to pass the law very quickly, perhaps by the State of the Union address next week. I do not expect California to conform to the federal change. Whether you should take...
Online Gambling Addresses
The IRS and Department of the Treasury stated in January 2009 that online gambling websites are considered to be foreign financial accounts. If you have $10,000 or more in one or more foreign bank and/or financial accounts, you must report them on Form TD F 90-22.1. There’s a problem, though. Most of these entities don’t broadcast their...
Senate Passes Haiti Charitable Contributions Bill
As expected, the Senate quickly and unanimously passed a bill allowing Americans who make charitable contributions to Haitian earthquake relief to take those charitable contributions on their 2009 tax returns. I expect President Obama to sign the measure very quickly. As I’ve mentioned before, do not expect conformity in California. Our legislature...

If you’re near the Phoenix Club (1340 S Sanderson Ave, Anaheim) come out and enjoy an introduction to this issue. I’ll also...
More Gambling Questions from the Mailbag
A few interesting questions have come in recently on gambling and taxes: Question. I think it’s ridiculous that you have to file an FBAR on an online gambling account. These aren’t bank accounts and I don’t think the government can force me to file this form. Answer. The Department of the Treasury has the unlucky task of determining...
Can I Add Some Snake Oil to that Pension Plan, Too?
If I were a business owner, wouldn’t I want this wonderful pension plan? Under this plan, I’d (a) be able to turn personal expenses into deductible pension contributions; (b) the pension plan would only cover me (and my family), not those pesky employees; (c) I’d be able to change (through alchemy, perhaps) my salary into a pension...
HR 2267: Much Ado About Nothing
Online poker players and the Poker Players Alliance are celebrating the markup and passage of HR 2267 in the House Financial Services Committee. The measure passed the committee on a vote of 41 yes, 22 no, with one Congresscritter voting “Present.” The measure can now be taken up by the full House of Representatives. The good news is...
California to Conform to Haitian Earthquake Charitable Contributions
AB347 which will conform California law to the federal election to deduct 2010 cash contribution to Haitian earthquake relief on 2009 returns, is waiting for Governor Schwarzenegger’s signature. He will sign the measure in the next couple of days; when he does, Californians can then claim such contributions as charitable donations on their...
