Today’s early UK Budget coverage was interesting at multiple levels. Last year everyone pretty much settled on #budget09 as the Twitter hashtag. This year, HM Government used #budget10 but many wanted to use #budget2010. That caused some confusion but it didn’t worry CoverItLive which can aggregate a good number of hashtags. Outside...

California’s constitution required a budget be enacted by June 30th. Californians ought to ask June 30th of what year as there are no negotiations in Sacramento right now. Unemployment is high, and revenues in the gaming industry fell by the largest percentage ever in 2009. Governor Jim Gibbons (R)...

The joy of living in California. The wonderful climate (it’s going to be 70 and sunny today). The beach is just a 15 minute drive from my house. I live in the safest city in the country. And our state has the most dysfunctional government in the world. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA) will be asking Uncle Sam for $8 billion to help close...
California’s Controller, John Chiang, called California’s cash situation “precarious.” Mr. Chiang called on the legislature and Governor Schwarzenegger to act on the $9 billion of budget cuts by March. The alternative is that California will run out of cash. If this sounds familiar, it should. This situation happened last...
In what I hope will be an occasional series of interesting and slightly entertaining podcasts, Nik Butler aka @loudmouthman agreed to give me a two minute elevator pitch on what he does and why you should hire him. That 2 mins turned into 11 mins but heh – who’s counting? As background, Nik is one of those people who, if you’ve...
Governor Schwarzenegger announced yesterday that he has reimposed mandatory furloughs on state workers. Beginning in August there will be three furlough days a month for most state employees. These days are without pay and are a means of helping to close the budget gap. Of course, the problem is that there is no budget. The reason is simple: Democrats...
There’s nothing new to report on the California budget. The unstoppable force has collided with the immovable object, and nothing’s happening for now. California Controller John Chiang is warning that he will soon be forced to issue registered warrants (aka IOUs). This brings up an interesting issue. Assume you’re a California taxpayer...
