California Election: Proposition 13

May 25th, 2010 admin

Here’s the first of our series on the June 2010 propositions on the California ballot. What?! Proposition 13 is on the ballot?! It’s not that Proposition 13 . This Proposition 13 actually does impact property tax, but it has no opposition. Proposition 13 would exempt building that are seismically retrofitted from reassessments. This impacts retrofits of unreinforced masonry buildings (these buildings are morel vulnerable to earthquake damage). Currently, these building are exempted from reassessment for 15 years. This would extend the exemption until the property is sold. Don’t forget to vote on June 8th.

Election Day
Today is primary election day in California, Nevada, and Arkansas. While Californians don’t have many tax-related propositions to vote on today, there are numerous individuals running for office in the primary: Every state Assemblyman, half of the State Senate, one US Senator, and the Governor are all on the ballot. If you’re in Orange...
California to Conform to Haitian Earthquake Charitable Contributions
AB347 which will conform California law to the federal election to deduct 2010 cash contribution to Haitian earthquake relief on 2009 returns, is waiting for Governor Schwarzenegger’s signature. He will sign the measure in the next couple of days; when he does, Californians can then claim such contributions as charitable donations on their...
For Sale With Mold
Mold inside a building can be a major health issue. Unfortunately, California’s Board of Equalization is housed in such a building . The 24-story building is in a prime, downtown Sacramento location. But leaks and mold abound, and the $15 million that would have fixed up the building has grown into $68 million today. Assemblyman Dave Jones...
Sales Tax Collections Drop $4.7 Billion in California
Well, that’s the amount that California sales tax collections dropped in the 2008-2009 fiscal year according to the Board of Equalization. Readers of Taxable Talk already know that income tax collections have fallen, so this unsurprising news is a double whammy to the Bronze Golden State. The report ( the full report is available here ) also...
Annualization Method for Estimated Taxes in California
Many taxpayers, especially those with income streams that are inconsistent, use the Annualization Method to make their estimated tax payments. For federal tax purposes, it’s relatively easy. You take the year-to-date income through the period end (March 31st, May 31st, August 31st, or December 31st), annualize it, compute the annual tax, and...
Unladylike Behavior or Election Year Politics?
Earlier this week California Attorney General (and Democratic candidate for Governor) Jerry Brown filed a $34 Million lawsuit against the Roni Deutch Law Firm. Ms. Deutsch ( who has a tax blog ) and her law firm focus on representing taxpayers in Offers In Compromise. Her firm is one of several that have television infomercials. From the press release...
1099 Repeal?
Before I head out the door, I just saw a short article that a repeal of the new requirement on issuance of 1099s (part of the health care fiasco) was introduced by Democrats today. The measure was an amendment to a bill on health care benefits on 9/11 respondents. The overall measure failed on a procedural vote (it needed a two-thirds vote to pass)....
Donations to Haiti Relief Via Online Gambling Websites
I’ve received quite a few inquiries asking about making a donation to Haiti earthquake relief via an online gambling website. Here’s the latest: An online poker site is saying that if I transfer funds to a specific account, they’ll use the money for earthquake relief in Haiti. Would such contributions be tax deductible? The answer...
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner!
Our favorite convicted tax felon has made the ballot in Ohio. James Traficant has seven signatures more than required and will be running as an Independent for Congress in Ohio’s 17th Congressional District. The Mahoning County Board of Elections will reportedly meet today and approve his name to be on the ballot; the Trumbell County Board...
Soon to be On the Street?
Chriss Street is Orange County’s Treasurer-Tax Collector. He’s the person responsible for collecting the property tax bills for Irvine, and the rest of Orange County. Mr. Street is up for re-election this June, and he’ll likely face a tough fight. On Friday, he was ordered to pay $7,068,765 for breaching his fiduciary duty in liquidating...
