Firms feel they must have something but rarely go to the trouble of making their efforts unique or interesting. Here’s one crappy example . Here’s one that’s much better. (check the blog content ) Then Mark followed it up by talking about the impending demise of ‘ halfway house ‘ firms. Once again – I agree but want to amplify. Mark’s thesis centres around differentiation. That’s a good starting point but his argument appears to assume that all other things i.e. the underpinning services, remain the same. AccountingWeb has an intriguing contest going on to discover the most progressive firm in the UK . It’s intriguing at multiple levels. The firms get to pitch yet with one exception have provided no links to their site The pitches vary widely but are mostly generic as Mark Lee would put it They are all tiny firms – what happened there?...
FreeAgent takes investment from IRIS
FreeAgent takes investment from IRIS
IRIS has taken a minority stake in FreeAgent Central for an undisclosed sum and has created a joint development and distribution partnership. This is an important announcement for the UK SaaS accounting market. In the past, start ups had to raise funds via venture capitalists whose agendas are driven by share price first, all other things second....

Hayes Knight: at last someone gets 21st century knowledge sharing
Ross Mayfield, co-founder SocialText pointed me to a case study of Hayes Knight , an ST customer that in my view ‘gets’ the connections between socializing tools and CRM as applied to professional services firms. Progress at last. I’ve only been saying that firms need to grasp this way of working for the last five years. Frustrating...
Spiraling up
Spiraling up
Towards the end of last week I was approached to take a peek at a review copy of a new book: Spiraling Up . (PDF preview) Catchy title aside, it talks about the things that distinguish top performing professional services firms from the average. Three statements caught my attention: Almost every firm says more or less the same thing. And clients...
Change our mode of thinking
Change our mode of thinking
It seems there’s a theme running here at the moment. Change. Whatever that might mean. The above video which features prof David Harvey, a radical sociologist , is something I came across as a result of sifting through some of Richard Murphy’s recent posts. As he says – this is taking a Marxian approach – anathema to many...
XBRL – asking the wrong question
XBRL – asking the wrong question
Mark Lee has a post about XBRL where he says: Clients will only agree to paying additional fees if they perceive that additional work is being done and that this benefits them in some way. Tagging company accounts for the taxman, using iXBRL tags, is going to be obligatory from 2011. It seems that plenty of accountants have yet to determine exactly...

So you want to be a saas consultant?
Read on… This is really a follow up post to the one I did last week re: NetSuit e and upon which Wayne Schultz commented : Where do typical consulting firms make money consulting on Netsuite or any SaaS. The main answer that I seem to hear from the early firms that are in this space providing consulting is that Netsuite/etc is the tool not...

Next stop: Cloud Computing World Forum
The conference season should be over by now but it isn’t. At least not for me. Next stop is London and the Cloud Computing World Forum being held at Olympia. I arrive Monday afternoon and will be there through Thursday. It’s going to be a pretty hectic time with filming, panel sessions to both chair and participate alongside a string...

Online poker players and the Poker Players Alliance are celebrating the markup and passage of HR 2267 in the House Financial Services Committee. The measure passed the committee on a vote of 41 yes, 22 no, with one Congresscritter voting “Present.” The measure can now be taken up by the full House of Representatives. The good news is...
The case for cloud accounting
The case for cloud accounting
Last week, Jeremy Roche, CEO FinancialForce presented at the Cloud Computing World Forum, making the case for cloud accounting. This 2min 1 sec video neatly encapsulates why this is something you should be considering, especially if you are operating electronic CRM or e-commerce for front of house activities. When talking about cloud computing,...
