Change our mode of thinking
It seems there’s a theme running here at the moment. Change. Whatever that might mean. The above video which features prof David Harvey, a radical sociologist , is something I came across as a result of sifting through some of Richard Murphy’s recent posts. As he says – this is taking a Marxian approach – anathema to many I know, often without understanding what it really means to take this path. What many people don’t realize for example is that sociology is the study of inequality, something that Marx was deeply concerned about at a philosophical level. You simply cannot discuss the problems that beset our economies, societies and business without recognizing the validity of that basis for new thinking. Contrast this with the critique that …

To his undying credit, John Stokdyk acknowledged the cock ups that AccountingWeb made in attempting to get its pay to play effort back on track Right now, they’re in deep water with little credible way of getting out. It’s a classic example of media thinking it understands what’s going on but without using its muscle to get side...
Mark Lee recently launched a scathing attack on generic emails sent out by professionals. Why am I not surprised? I’ve been saying much the same about template driven websites. Firms feel they must have something but rarely go to the trouble of making their efforts unique or interesting. Here’s one crappy example . Here’s one...
Ask any practice partner about their understanding of the client base and they’ll likely be miffed at the implication they might not be au fais with what clients really think. After all, if there is no real client retention issues beyond the usual death or sale reasons then why would be concerned? Except that in real life, things are never...

While I talk a lot about innovation on this blog I’ve steered away from Enterprise 2.0 . If this is a new concept to you then don’t worry. You’ve not missed much. In very simple terms, think of it as blogs, wikis – that kind of thing – but used in a business context. I reserve most of my discussion on this topic to...
If you spend any amount of time on the Internet you might have noticed the rising number of ‘how to…’ lists there are out there. I mostly hate them. I was talking about this with a pall earlier today. It was in the context of there being so much vendor driven ’stuff’ that gets repeated and repeated with almost no...
Earlier in the week I referenced a case study that showed the benefits of cloud integration using a cloud based platform as the basis for joining different systems together. This is often cited as the ‘best’ way to expand a functional footprint but it is not the only way. In the above video, we see how Siemens needed a professional...
While I tend to concentrate on professional services firms a couple of questions were raised this week that got me thinking. The last two days I’ve been out in Silicon Valley in analyst briefings with Workday and SAP Labs. Workday is noodling over and endeavouring to redefine the meaning of work. One of its trains of thought goes like this:...
When I read this, I did a double take. From the New York Times: Gov. David A. Paterson and legislative leaders have tentatively agreed to allow the state and municipalities to borrow nearly $6 billion to help them make their required annual payments to the state pension fund. And, in classic budgetary sleight-of-hand, they will borrow the money to...
It is well after the tax deadline of April 15 th and you suddenly realize you have not sent in your federal income tax. What now? Many people will panic and think the feds will soon be knocking down their door. Out of fear, many more people will choose to not act and turn in the required forms since they are already so late. It can be a scary...
