She Can’t Take It With Her

July 27th, 2010 admin

I thought I’d seen most of the methods of hiding cash from the taxman, but this short story is a new one . It seems that a British businessman decided that his aunt needed £140,000 to accompany her to the hereafter. Well, the businessman owed £50,000 to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (formerly Inland Revenue, the British equivalent to the IRS). His aunt couldn’t take it with her…and neither was the businessman successful in burying his cash.

Next Time, Hide the Cash and Books Better
I’ve commented from time-to-time that cash income is just as taxable as payments by check or credit card. I’ve also mentioned that certain businesses have more problems than others with that; strip clubs are one example. Another example would be nightclubs. Abdul Khanu owned three successful nightclubs in Washington, DC: H2O, VIP, and...
Bozo Tax Tip #2: Be Suspicious!
Another repeat, but one that is a continual issue with cash business. It may be “cash and carry,” but cash is taxable in all ways. And cash reporting (or lack thereof) can be a problem. Our #1 Bozo Tax Tip is brand new for this year and it will be up tomorrow! Anyway, let’s be suspicious: Given my practice area, I deal with individuals...
Best Structuring In a Supporting Role…
With the Academy Awards being broadcast this evening, it’s appropriate to look at a case from the movies. Cindy Ondracek and her husband owned a drive-in movie theater in Port Orchard, Washington; they also owned another cinema in Bremerton, Washington. The businesses were successful: they generated over $2 million in gross revenues, most of...
No Progress in California Budget; May Soon Impact Tax Refunds
There’s nothing new to report on the California budget. The unstoppable force has collided with the immovable object, and nothing’s happening for now. California Controller John Chiang is warning that he will soon be forced to issue registered warrants (aka IOUs). This brings up an interesting issue. Assume you’re a California taxpayer...

The mouse and the elephant – aka 3CA v HMRC
We all know the story about how an elephant is allegedly afraid of a mouse. Here’s a similar tale that should cheer up those who are feeling the strain of 31st January tax filing. Almost from the start of this blog, Stuart Jones of 3CA has followed what I do, has a blog , experiments with new technology and helps others by answering general...
Bozo Tax Tip #6: Just Don’t File
We’re running some repeats, but there is some new Bozo material coming. It’s just that people keep trying the same things over and over again. It’s tough to avoid the tax system. There are currency transaction reports (cash transactions of $10,000 or more) and suspicious activity reports (theoretically can be done on any transaction, but usually...
Bozo Tax Tip #5: Cash Isn’t Taxable
Last week a new client came into my office for the preparation of his tax return. Everything went smoothly, and an hour or so later his returns were complete and filed, he had his copies of the returns, and the Bozo festivities (unknowingly to me) were about to begin. He asked me if I’d take cash. “Sure,” I replied. The client then...

Are Registered Warrants (IOUs) in California’s Future…Again?
California’s Controller, John Chiang, called California’s cash situation “precarious.” Mr. Chiang called on the legislature and Governor Schwarzenegger to act on the $9 billion of budget cuts by March. The alternative is that California will run out of cash. If this sounds familiar, it should. This situation happened last...
The Use Tax Mess in California
I’ve often wondered, how do you make the Franchise Tax Board (California’s income tax agency) look good? Well, I and other California tax professionals have discovered the answer: Have the Board of Equalization implement a program that had such a poor design that the FTB looks good in comparison. That program is the mandatory Use Tax...
