The new dork
The new generation of entrepreneurs have much to teach us ‘older’ types about the business of doing business in the 21st century. This is a superb example which, as Mike McDerment, CEO of Freshbooks said : Marketing done right …to which I’d add – inventive as well. If we take this as a proxy for the way the next generation...

Intacct: in tune with the SaaS trend
Yesterday evening I fielded a quick fire, in depth conversation with Intacct executives. If you’re a UK based business or vendor the name may be new, less so in the US where they’ve accumulated 3,300 customers (representing some 30,000 users) and have a pipeline of more than 1,000 CPA firms interested in SaaS solutions. Average cost...

Research confirms need for new professional business models
Almost from day one I have been predicting the commoditzation of professional business models. Yesterday, WebCPA reports that : A new report by the International Federation of Accountants highlights the expanding role of small and midsized practices in advising their business clients. IFAC’s Small and Medium Practices Committee has published...

As a buy side person my antenna are always on alert for ’stuff’ that conflates one issue with another without any scientific proof to back the marketing statement. Adrian Pearson, senior partner at a Xero based practice has recently been schmoozed by Hamish Edwards, one of Xero’s co-founders and himself a practitioner. How well do you know your clients?
Ask any practice partner about their understanding of the client base and they’ll likely be miffed at the implication they might not be au fais with what clients really think. After all, if there is no real client retention issues beyond the usual death or sale reasons then why would be concerned? Except that in real life, things are never...

Goodman Jones does it again
Goodman Jones has always been one of my favourite clients. City based, medium sized practice, go get senior partner, great IT shop and always willing to listen. Like many others it is working its way through the recession. Earlier today, Philip Woodgate pinged me about a video he produced (see above.) Here are the production notes he sent me:...
Hot Air Leads to Trouble
When I was an undergraduate in college, I did research at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory on the catalyzed production of methane from graphite. I don’t believe that research led to commercial production of natural gas (which is methane, CH 4 . The government likes the idea of obtaining methane from unconventional sources. There’s a tax...

Define your success by understanding what clients REALLY want
Rick Telberg’s CPA Trendlines has a survey that should get any professional thinking. Entitled: How Do Business Owners Define Success? It draws inspiration from a recent business owners’ survey. Rick says: Accountants often define success in terms of revenue, net income, or maybe client service. But the Enterprise Council on Small...
Why Clear Books research fails
Why Clear Books research fails
The mini-storm around Clear Books research is an object lesson in failure. In the end it doesn’t matter whether Clear Books had involvement in the construction of the survey or whether its hands are clean. What matters is the perception it creates among those who are interested in these kinds of thing. It doesn’t even matter whether...
